Learning German is not an easy task and you need the right teacher to help you on your journey. I learned German as an English speaker and I regularly get told that I speak "akzentfrei" and then people ask me if I'm sure that I don't have any heritage.

This is not a matter of talent, but a matter of strategies. You need to understand how langauges work, how the bran works, and ensure that you are using the correct strategies over time (think Atomic Habits) to get the best results.

Stop them from responding in English.

The first thing that people hear when you speak a foreign langauge is your accent. Unfortunately, many teachers do not support students beyond "repeat after me" in terms of descrbing how sounds in the language are made. Moreover, they do not discuss learning strategies with students so they can become independent learners themselves.
